Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)

Low Level Laser Therapy

Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is a treatment modality used by Merseyside Health in the management of musculoskeletal injuries. Laser therapy devices emit light which can penetrate the skin and stimulate the soft tissues at a cellular level. These medical grade lasers are non-thermal and emit no sounds or vibrations. They work by penetration of the skin to stimulate the cells involved in tissue repair and inflammation.

Your therapist will always conduct a full assessment of your condition and provide information and advice about the use of LLLT. Laser is not a painful or mechanically stimulating treatment and so you should not experience any pain or discomfort during application. Laser requires direct application to the skin and so you may wish to wear clothing to allow you to expose the body area involved.

Laser therapy is considered safe but there are precautions related to cancer, pregnancy and epilepsy. Laser therapy should not be directed at the eye (goggles are worn during application as a safety measure).

Laser therapy is rarely used as a stand-alone treatment. This form of treatment is supported by evidence but is thought to be most effective as part of a wide range of measures which may include exercise, advice and condition management education.
