Amputee Physiotherapy in Liverpool
Amputee physiotherapy helps people rebuild strength, balance, mobility and confidence after an amputation. At Merseyside Health in Liverpool, our HCPC-registered physiotherapists provide one-to-one rehabilitation in the gym, in the hydrotherapy pool and at home, with personalised goals for each stage of your recovery. We work with self-funding patients, case managers and solicitors.
Who is amputee physiotherapy for?
Our amputee rehabilitation supports adults whose amputation was recent or some time ago. It can help if you:
- are building strength and fitness after surgery
- are learning to walk with a prosthesis or want to walk more confidently
- want to improve your balance and reduce your risk of falls
- have back, hip or knee pain linked to changes in the way you move
- want to get back to work, sport or hobbies
- have finished NHS rehabilitation and want to keep progressing
How we support your rehabilitation
Your plan is built around your goals and can combine several approaches.
Gym-based physiotherapy
One-to-one sessions in a gym setting help you rebuild fitness, strength and confidence with a physiotherapist by your side. We use the gyms at both our Crosby clinic and Liverpool Hope University and the rehabilitation space at Greenbank Sports Academy which is equipped with parallel bars and balance training aids.
Hydrotherapy
Exercising in warm water takes pressure off your joints and can make it easier to work on strength, balance and walking. Hydrotherapy can kick-start your rehabilitation or run alongside land-based sessions, in a group or one to one at our partner pool based in Waterloo.
Physiotherapy at home
If getting to a clinic is difficult, especially in the early stages, our physiotherapists can begin your rehabilitation through our home visit service.
Working alongside your wider care team
Our physiotherapy aims to complement the care you receive from your limb centre and prosthetist. Where it would help, our dietitians can also support nutrition for recovery and healthy weight management. We are also proud of our local partnerships with skilled orthotists at The Great Gait company.
What happens at your first session?
Your first session is a detailed assessment of your strength, balance, mobility and how you are managing day to day. We talk through what matters most to you, then set clear, realistic goals and a plan to work towards them.
Referrals from case managers and solicitors
We accept referrals for amputee rehabilitation directly from case managers, solicitors and insurers. You can expect a collaborative approach, regular communication and timely reports on treatment and progress. Visit our case manager referrals page or contact us to discuss a client.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a prosthesis to start physiotherapy?
No. Physiotherapy can help before you have a prosthesis, by building strength, flexibility and balance, and continues to help once you are walking with one.
Can I have private amputee physiotherapy alongside NHS care?
Yes. Many people use private physiotherapy to add extra sessions or to keep progressing once NHS rehabilitation ends, and we are happy to work alongside your existing care team.
Where are sessions held?
Sessions can take place at our Liverpool clinics with gym facilities, in the hydrotherapy pool in Waterloo or in your own home, depending on what suits your rehabilitation best.
Can my case manager arrange sessions for me?
Yes. Case managers can refer you directly, and they will receive progress updates from us throughout your rehabilitation.
