Muscle Stimulation

Muscle Stimulation

Muscle stimulation involves the application of electrical stimulation through the skin to a target muscle or group of muscles. This can assist the muscle to contract and has a useful application for people regaining strength after an operation. Muscle stimulation can also be used to support neurological weakness following stroke. Electrical stimulation to the muscle can support exercise and functional tasks such as extending the wrist during reaching or lifting the ankle during a step-up movement.

The stimulation can be controlled by either the therapist or the patient. This is a treatment that is generally incorporated into a standard rehab session. Patients can also be shown how to safely apply this safely at home to support their daily exercises.
