Trauma Rehabilitation

Trauma Rehabilitation

Complex trauma rehabilitation is required for patients who may have suffered multiple injuries. Frequently additional complexity in terms of psychological, cognitive and social impacts upon a person may be present. With injuries resulting from a combination of orthopedic, neurological, burns and amputations, individuals may also be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental health conditions.

Due to the extended nature of the rehabilitation period often required, local community-based services are often best placed to minimize the costs and disruption of regular travel. At Merseyside Health we combine clinic and gym-based rehabilitation for physical strengthening, gait and mobility exercises and restoration of cardiovascular fitness. In addition, we can support individuals with home visitation and approaches to support a return to active lifestyle such as supported outdoor mobility sessions.

Complex trauma rehabilitation is a specialty often well suited to hydrotherapy interventions. The buoyancy and warmth of the water can open exercise possibilities not possible in the clinic or gym environments. For more information about our hydrotherapy service please visit our hydrotherapy service page.

The need for multidisciplinary teamwork is never more important than when planning complex trauma rehabilitation. Our physiotherapists undertake additional training in psychologically informed practice and are able to signpost clients who may need additional specialist support.

Sudden changes in activity levels and long periods of immobility during intensive care or prolonged hospitalisation can have profound impacts on a person’s body composition and energy availability during rehabilitation. Merseyside Health recognises this vital component in the rehabilitation process and can provide direct nutritional support through a qualified HCPC registered dietician.
