Women’s Health Specialist Physiotherapy

Expert physiotherapy services for Women

Here at Merseyside Health, we believe that women should have access to the highest quality physiotherapy, delivered locally in a safe and comfortable environment. Our specialist women’s health service focuses on conditions unique to women that can be effectively treated with physiotherapy and exercise.

Our services are suitable for women at all stages of life — from support with pre- and postnatal care, bladder and bowel incontinence, and sexual health, to helping women manage the challenges of pelvic health in sport and during menopause.

We aim to place a strong emphasis on supporting and empowering women. Pelvic health symptoms do not need to be accepted as a normal part of being female—they can be resolved with the right help.

Our focus has been on ensuring enough time is allocated for appointments, so patients can fully discuss their feelings around their symptoms. This is because many women have been struggling both psychologically and physically with their pelvic health concerns and this allows us to provide them with our full support and expertise.

Being able to support women at all stages of life is very important to us—from antenatal care for those experiencing pelvic girdle pain, and postnatal support through a Mummy MOT, to helping women return to the kind of exercise that meets their expectations.

We also support women who need help managing their pelvic health during menopause, as well as through transitional stages and into later life. We are here to support our patients and their bodies through every stage of change.

Female athlete care is another area we really enjoy tackling (no pun intended!). High-performance injury prevention and pelvic health in sport is a key area where many women are being held back from reaching their full potential. By bringing our women’s health and MSK teams together in gym-based clinics, we can create real change. Women and girls want to lift weights, run, jump, and get stronger—we’re here to help them meet those goals.

All Women’s Health Physiotherapy appointments take place in a safe, private, and comfortable environment with a female physiotherapist who is both specialized in and passionate about women’s health. We also have appointments in Women’s only spaces such as Hearts Fitness – Crosby.

During your appointment, your physiotherapist will begin by discussing your medical history, symptoms, and any concerns you may have, including concerns related to pelvic health, bladder or bowel function, pain, menopause, or postnatal recovery. Time will be taken to fully understand how these concerns may be affecting you both physically and emotionally, ensuring you feel supported throughout the process.

Following this, a physical examination will be carried out, which includes an assessment of your mobility and movement. A pelvic floor internal examination may be recommended to support the assessment. This will only ever be performed with your full, informed consent*. Based on the findings of your assessment, your physiotherapist will develop a personalised treatment plan. This may include advice on lifestyle and habit changes, specific exercises, education about your anatomy and how your bladder and bowel function, dietary guidance, relaxation techniques, and support for comfortable intercourse where appropriate.

*You are welcome to have a chaperone present during the examination, and we kindly ask that you let the clinic know in advance if you would like one, so we can make arrangements. If you would prefer not to have an internal examination, that is absolutely fine— this is just one part of the overall examination in many cases.

What is a Mummy MOT

The Mummy MOT is a specialist postnatal examination for women following both vaginal and caesarean deliveries. This is a one hour appointment which includes a full postural screen, pelvic floor muscle assessment, abdominal muscle exam to check for any separation and screening for any bladder, bowel or sexual dysfunction. Following this we will provide a personalised treatment plan for any concerns we discover and address any anxieties about returning to sex and exercise following childbirth. We will also provide education and advice on postnatal activity and discuss a personalised rehabilitation programme with your goals in mind to help you to get back to whatever activity is important to you.

A Mummy MOT is ideal for anyone experiencing postnatal pelvic or back pain, abdominal weakness or separation, or bladder, bowel, or sexual dysfunction following childbirth. It also provides valuable support for safely returning to exercise after having a baby. Additionally, it can be there to simply offer reassurance that your recovery is on track and help prevent potential issues from developing in the future.
